IT Fundamentals

Description

This course will be an overview of the fundamentals of information technology. In the course you will learn to identify basic components and terminology. You will be introduced to programming, operating system configuration, network device operations, installing of software and apply basic security tasks and techniques. As part of the course, you will develop troubleshooting and preventative techniques to maintain devices and the networks they attach to.

The course will align with the CompTIA IT fundamental industry certification. This course will help prepare the high school teacher so they can get students started in a career in IT. The certification is not a required part of this course, but you will explore the certification process and requirements. Many tools (some free to educators) and resources will be covered.

Prerequisites

Basic computer skills.


Textbook

None. We will use materials from testout.com. Attendees must have online access and an email from a .edu address to get the free access.

At-Home Computer Requirements

  • Attendees will need an internet connection - the track will use web-based materials.
  • Access to a Windows 10 machine with administrator level access is recommended.
  • A web camera is preferred to help with class interactions.

Instructor

Greg Brodt has been teaching IT related course for nearly 30 years. He is currently a full-time IT instructor at Northwood Technical College in Rice Lake WI. He has a master’s degree from the U of MN in electrical engineering (digital design) and has taught courses in electronics, programming, networking, VOIP, Wireless, Ethical hacking, Intrusion detection, security, routing, switching and many others IT topics. He holds industry certifications including CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, Cisco Certified network Associate (CCNA),CyberOps and he is a CISCO IT Essentials instructor trainer. He maintains connected to the industry by continuously taking new classes and doing consulting work. He is passionate about IT and the opportunities for students and is looking forward to working with you.
